Seven years after Kimberley Locke’s third place win on American Idol, her superstar status continues to shine bright. With Randy Jackson’s blessing, Kimberley signed an exclusive, singles-only contract to his new label, Dream Merchant 21, with the hope of transforming the industry’s delicate relationship between artists and their respective labels. Her first single, “Strobelight,” stands as the first product of their unique partnership – eventually peaking at the top of Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Chart. To date, Locke has eight #1 singles on Billboard’s various charts.
In the midst of a promotional campaign for “Strobelight,” Kimberley Locke managed to squeeze some time out of her busy schedule and settle down for an interview with Clayton Perry – reflecting on her relationship with Randy Jackson, Freda Payne’s response to her cover of “Band of Gold,” and her charity, One Heartland. Congratulations on your new single, “Strobelight,” as well as your recent signing to Randy Jackson’s dance music label, Dream Merchant 21. How does it feel to be the artist approached to christen this label?
I guess there is a lot hinging on the success of my record, considering I’m the first artist on Randy’s new label, but I also believe that if Randy didn’t think I was capable of doing it, that he would not have selected me to fill the space. One of the things that I love about Randy is that he is a businessperson, and he has been in every aspect of this business, so he knows it very well. I feel very safe working with him. I feel like I’m working with somebody who has my best interests at hand, and at the end of the day, this is a partnership between Randy and I. My success and his label success, in the beginning, kind of depends upon the success of the music. And the music is the common denominator between the two of us. We want to put out great music, because that’s what’s going to make us both successful. So I think that the fact that Randy chose me says a lot, because Randy Jackson doesn’t have to work with anybody that he doesn’t believe in.
Although you are well-known for your participation on the third season of American Idol, how has your relationship with Randy Jackson grown over the past seven years?
At first, we didn’t really have a strong relationship. It’s funny, though. After Idol, any time that I ran into Randy, he always knew what I was up to. So I feel like he was keeping tabs on my career, because that’s his industry. But he always knew. Like my first single, “8th World Wonder” came out, he was like, “Yo. Heard the single. Congratulations. It’s No. 1.” Then I’d see him again, and he was like, “Yo. I heard about “Band of Gold.” It always made me feel good when I ran into him, because it was like: “Randy Jackson knows about my career?” I signed with a new manager, Jay Schwartz, and we were talking about the next project. And Randy has been working on a project with Gladys Knight, who my manager also works with. And he said, “Well, why don’t we sit and talk to Randy? I have a relationship with Randy through Gladys, and of course, you have a relationship with Randy. Let’s just talk to him and get advice.” And I was like, “Cool.” So what initially started out as a meeting just to kind of pick Randy’s brain and get his thoughts and his ideas, ended up to me basically looking at Randy and saying, “Do you want to do this project with me?” Because it was just kind of like one day I was sitting there, we were talking. And, you know, Randy’s like the perfect mentor. And I’m sitting there, and I’m looking at him, and I’m soaking up everything that he’s saying. I looked at him and I said: “Well, Randy, what do you think about us doing this project together?” And he just kind of looked at me, and said: “Yeah, let me think about it.” So I pressed him. “Don’t be blowing smoke up my a**!” [laughing] I just wanted him to be real with me. But what I know about Randy now is that Randy’s a real person. If he’s interested, he’s interested. If he’s not, he’s not.
KIMBERLEY LOCKE’S “Strobelight” SHINES BRIGHT ON BILLBOARDLocke earns # 1 Breakout Spot on Hot Dance Club Chart
New York, NY – (June 7, 2010) – On the heels of a new partnership with renowned producer Randy Jackson on his new label DreamMerchant21, KIMBERLEY LOCKE reveals the continued success of her April release of “Strobelight”. The now megahit wrangles Billboard’s #1 spot on The Hot Dance Club Chart amongst the likes of Kelis and Kylie Minogue.
Such positive reception of the track has sparked the attention of several celebrated DJ’s and producers who have since created multiple remixes. The original, and its most played remix by Tony Moran and Warren Rigg, now dominate the dance floor.
No stranger to climbing the charts, the Nashville native has had eight Top 20 Adult Contemporary hits, three #1 dance hits, and eight #1’s across various Billboard charts.
Most recently, Locke was honored to attend an event hosted by Michelle Obama at Wayne State University for the First Lady’s Detroit youth leadership and mentoring program. Up next for the star will follow her game plan with Randy Jackson and a handful of performances, including Seattle Pride 2010 on June 27th. In an interview with AOL’s QueerSighted.com Locke said, “the deal we have is a singles deal. Randy’s philosophy is that when people go to iTunes, they just buy the singles they like. So we’ll do a new single every six to eight months and maybe do an album down the line.” In any case, anticipation of chart toppers like “Strobelight” every couple of months is something to get used to.

In a recent interview with Out.com, former “American Idol” contestant Kimberly Locke made some comments about her alma mater, especially with regard to Ford and Coke videos she did as a contestant.
Now, in a statement to “Extra,” Locke would like to clear the air: “Recently, in an interview that I did with Out.com that also appeared on PerezHilton.com, I was quoted as saying that Ford and Coke “whored us [the contestants] out.” I would like to apologize for my poor choice of words in that interview. I, in no way, shape, form or fashion, had any ill intentions. I understand that Ford and Coke are huge sponsors of the show and that affords every finalist — myself included — many wonderful opportunities…
The Hitfix Interview: Kimberley Locke on this season’s ‘American Idol’
Who says you can’t go home again? After coming in third on “American Idol” in 2003, Kimberley Locke signed a record deal with Curb Records and scored six Top 10 Adult Contemporary hits including “8th World Wonder.” She also starred on “Celebrity Fit Club.”
Last month, she released “Strobelight,” her first single under her new record deal with Dream Merchant, the label run by “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson. The deal has reunited the two. The tune deserves to be a dance smash.
Locke is funny, smart and committed to using her fame to help others. On June 19, she’ll host and perform at the Disco Diva Bash in Nashville. Proceeds from the charity event will benefit Camp Heartland, a camp for children with HIV/AIDS, homeless teens and those in the GBLT community…
Most of the American Idol viewing public may feel like the competition is Crystal Bowersox to lose, but she doesn’t have Kimberley Locke’s vote.
Locke, who came in third place on American Idol second season in 2003, has been watching closely and she’s rooting for… Lee DeWyze.
DeWyze, Bowersox, and Casey James are the remaining contenders to capture the season 9 crown.
“I am rooting for Lee bcause I like Lee’s style. I think he has grown. In the very beginning, I wasn’t a fan of his. Not because he wasn’t talented, but because I didn’t think he was having fun. And over the past few weeks, I’ve really watched him come alive. He’s got talent. And I think he has talent he hasn’t even tapped into yet.”
